On the 11th of January 2024, Nigerians have been thrown into a state of mourning and reflection after an official report was disclosed that Amarachi Ugochukwu, a 32 years old employee of Globus Bank, Ikorordu, Lagos was unfortunately found dead in the restroom of her office. She committed suicide,
Like any other regular day, Amarachi, a member of the marketing team of Globus Bank, Ikorodu branch, resumed to work looking normal as always. Work had started and everyone had gotten into their tasks for the day, Within a few hours of signing in, Amarachi decided to excuse herself to the restroom. No one really paid attention to the diary and the bottle she took along with her. Who would have envisioned that? In fact, everyone was engulfed in whatever they were up to at that moment that they couldn’t care about the usual movement of their colleagues, let alone begin to second guess their intentions.
It was all work and a bit of side distractions from social media until Amarachi’s cellphone, which she left on her table, was incessantly ringing and she hasn’t returned to her seat, her duties and her endlessly ringing phone. After what seemed like a lifetime passed and everyone started to ask themselves “Where is Amarachi?”. Her colleagues began to search for her around until one of the office toilets was forced open due to it being locked from inside.
Amarachi’s body was found. Sprawled on the floor and lifeless.
Right beside her body was an open diary with a suicide note where she lamented the gloominess of her life due to the hardship of the economy and the bleakness of the future for her. Alongside the suicide note was a bottle of an insecticide, which she gulped to end her life. She wrote:
“Nothing is working in my life. My figures are low. My brain is clogged up. The economy is getting harder. My decisions are wrong. My mind is messed up. The future doesn’t seem bright at all. I see extreme hardship. I can’t bear the pain anymore,” she wrote in the suicide note.
Ugochukwu apologised to her parents and other members of her family in the suicide note.
“I’m sorry mum, I’m sorry dad, I’m sorry Nene, Okwe, Toto, Nazor, Chuchu, Ifunanya,” she added.
She concluded by writing, “Dear Lord, have mercy on me!”
Report from a source included that the bank manager had reported the case to the police. The corpse was removed by the police and deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital for autopsy. The police in Lagos are investigating the incident.
