Country Notes – Japan (December 18, 2025)

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in parliament on November 7th that a crisis (Taiwan) might constitute a “survival threatening situation” for Japan. A “survival threatening situation” would give Japan the justification to deploy its military alongside other countries. A Taiwan crisis would be a naval blockade of Taiwan by China’s navy.

Major trading partner
Both share concerns about China’s giving assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific
High connectiveness between the Japanese and Taiwanese people.
Japan provides pull for Taiwan’s international presence, visibly claiming China’s 1 nation policy, but at the same time, strengthening Taiwan’s global integration.

Japan broke diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1972 and established diplomatic relations with the PRC (People’s Republic of China) in 1972.
