Referendum on Igbo Secession from Nigeria

The separatist group IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) have lashed out at the facilitators of the “IgboMustGo” campaign in southwestern Nigeria. The IPOB wants a referendum on whether the Biafra region should secede from Nigeria into a separate country.
The group accused the authorities in the southwest region of the country of looking the other way in regards to the “IgboMustGo” campaign. Additionally, the group said that sponsors of the “IgboMustGo” campaign were extensively placed within the Lagos State and Federal governments and urged southerners to think twice about their actions in the southwestern region of the country. IPOB Director of Media and Publicity issued a public statement which was made available to Punch Newspapers.
The rivalry between the Yoruba ethnic group in the northern part of the country vs. the Igbos have been a major source of tension in the country. Ohanaeze Ndigbo is an Igbo socio-cultural organization in Nigeria. The group’s purpose is the represent the interests of all Igbo communities inside and outside Nigeria.
Ndigbo has stated that the Igbo community will not kowtow to bullying or threats by anti-Igbo Yoruba groups or individuals. The Igbo want to exit Nigeria peacefully and maintain good relations with Nigeria.
Ndigbo has asked President Tinubu to release Mazi Nnmadi Kanu and organize a referendum on the issue of secession.
