South Sudan officials have confirmed the purchase of land on the coast of Djibouti to build a port. The port will serve to handle both South Sudan’s exports of its crude oil as well as a point of entry for its imports via Djibouti and Ethiopia. During the ceremony, back when South Sudan and Djibouti established formal relations there was an invitation to visit the Port of Djibouti and assess its strengths on taking advantage of this resource on developing its trade (imports and exports).
The Djibouti – Ethiopia railway does not currently extend to South Sudan.
